In a world where mental illness is still often shrugged off as nothing to worry about or put down to a person being weak, it is important that those who do suffer stand together. United to provide support to each other, especially those who perhaps do not have anywhere else to look.
I have battled with depression for many years, it originally started in my mid-teens and despite a few years of relative calm it came back with a vengeance last year. If it wasn’t for some of my friends who knew what I was going through and the fact I was lucky enough to have one of the kindest GP’s (general practitioner doctor) I could care to meet I wouldn’t be here writing this post today. And it is because of the support I received, and the stories I have heard about those who didn’t get the help they needed, that I decided I needed to do something, anything, to help.
Through research and many hours in forums, on Tumblr and on YouTube I realised that an outlet that a lot of people turn to when they can’t find help at home is the internet, particularly YouTube and Tumblr. And it is because of this that I decided to start a series of videos on my YouTube channel all about depression and how you can help yourself and those around you who suffer from it.
As someone who does manage day to day, and has managed to get off medication and still get by, I think it is extremely important to pass on my methods to others. They might not work for everyone, but hey, if they help just one person come back from the edge, or even just help someone get through the day a little happier then it was more than worth the effort!
I also find that talking about my problems to the world and letting people know how I tackled them helps me feel better on the bad days and makes me feel more confident with myself in general. So in a way helping others is also helping me. So it’s a win all round!
So far I have two videos completed and intend to do more. The first one is an insight in to depression and a sufferer’s mindset and the second is all about coping mechanisms. They can be found on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/angryhatter) and in a play list HERE.
I really hope that my videos can help those out there who need it.
Thank you so much for your time and for reading this post.
Be well everyone!
