My 29 year old son has been struggling with mental illness for about 14 years. He had a formal diagnosis of Schizophrenia - Disorganized Type about 2 years ago. He was diagnosed and treated by several doctors and spent time in psychiatric hospitals six times.
He was also deemed to have a severe and persistent mental illness by a judge in his Social Security Disability hearing. He was arrested recently because he was on the roof of a business fighting demons (off meds again). The prosecutor insisted (out loud in court) that he is “faking mental illness” and she does not want him to “benefit from mental health court.”
So, in spite of all the doctors, therapists, judge and hospitals that have found him to be mentally ill the jail doctor has taken him off his psychiatric meds against his will, “to see what will happen.” He goes before the Judge on Oct. 10th to see if he gets into Mental Health Court or gets sent to prison. How can this be happening!?
