Yolandie, the Story of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder
Yolandie is a 4 yr old little girl who has been diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder. She is my youngest of 3 daughters, and adopted. She came home to us at 5 days old, directly from the hospital. At the age of just 9 mos old I began to notice a difference in Yolandie, she was so angry and stiff all the time. Nothing made her happy, nothing calmed or soothed her. Early intervention was involved, we had testing done, saw specialists, tried it all. At the age of 18 months she went to a children’s hospital. The pediatric psychiatric hospital in our area. They knew something was wrong, very wrong, but she was a baby, not too much could be done besides OT and behavior intervention, we did this. At age 3 she was worsening, the fits, the rage, the tantrums all were horrendous, and NOTHING worked. She was sent back to the hospital. Two different meds were trialed, nothing was affective however, she left unstable and with sporadic random DXs. This brings me to current day. Yolandie is now 4 yrs old. She has recently completed her 3rd admission at the hospital. She did 7 med trials, failed them, the behaviors, the side effects, the tantrums, the meltdowns, it was all horrendous. She was discharged after 10 weeks with a diagnosis finally. A scary, hard, diagnosis of severe bi polar disorder. This is our story. And it’s just beginning. I am hoping to somehow, someway get her story out there, spread the awareness for pediatric bi polar disorder. It’s not terrible twos, or ferocious fours, it’s real and it exists. Help me help her, plus so many more. It’s bi polar disorder. This children need our advocacy
