What it is Like Living with Bi-polar I
How do I manage life with Bi-polar I? This is a complicated question for those who observe me on a day-to-day basis, such as my husband. Even though my husband understands my illness better than anyone, he has learned to love me unconditionally while taking steps to take of h own emotional needs At times, I feel helpless to control my moods ad fa into self-pity with thoughts that I am a burden to my family and they would be better off without m. I have never attempted suicide, however, I have seriously considered it. Bi-polar I is a very severe disorder, and if not taken seriously, it can have grave consequences.
According to David Oliver, founder and editor of the Bi-polar Inner Circle, there are eight deadly mistakes people make who have this illness.
- They fail to recognize that bi-polar disorder is very serious and they need to stand up to it. The statistics are alarming. One out of five will commit suicide.
- They fail to recognize how crucial is medication is. Without medication, the chances increase for suicide attempts. When you stop taking medication, it can lead to behaviors which will spiral the person ito mania, or worse, depression.
- They fail to protect their finances. Many people with I-polar disorder commit suicide after realizing they have drained their family of al savings, retirement, and other income.
- They don’t see their health care provider regularly and be honest. To receive the best results from treatment, they must see their h4alth care professionals frequently (I see my therapist weekly d my psychiatrist every 6-8 weeks).
- They don’t take care of themselves. My take up s much o their time taking care of family members that they don’t take care of themselves
- They don’t take charge of their bi-polar illness. Some let the bi-polar illness disorder wr them out to the point of exhaustion and hopelessness of ever being stable again.
- Thy fail to believer there is a bi-polar equation, with several parts or variables. Each person with bi-polar disorder has their unique equation that fits them. Note: I will share mine below.
- Thy assume the will never have another episode.
