SCAPEGOATED
Hi my friends, my name is Rachelle and I am bipolar along with a few other illnesses such as: ADD, anxiety, panic attacks, and PTSD. I have a controversial subject I would like to share with all of you who have questions about being mentally ill and upholding your 2nd Amendment Rights. I am sick and tired of all the negative stigmatisms that revolve around mental illness and gun control. I have been bipolar my entire life and have been medicated since the very young age of 12. Those of you who go way back as I do (I am 44) remember the type of drugs they had to offer and the awful side effects. The compulsive shaking of the hands, locking jaws, to name a couple. I made it through that horrible period in my life not knowing what lied ahead for my future.
When I went to High School the stigmas attached to mental illness were the same that are attached to “One flew over the cuckoo's nest.” We were frowned upon, people had very little patience with our diseases because of a giant disconnect called ignorance. When people found out you were different and were a “manic depressive” the fabulous name for bipolar back then; the reactions were often unsettling to say the least. You were judged harshly and shamefully. You were thought to be an unequal. Well at least that's what I experienced.
Now it’s happening again in 2016. If I hear another rage on gun control because of mentally ill people I’m going to scream. We have become the scapegoat for mass shootings. We are the most misunderstood group of people that have ever graced the earth. Sure there are bad people out there that do mass shootings and murder and they may have a mental illness but that doesn't mean every mentally ill person has this grotesque hatred for all that is innocent in life. We are not monsters and I stand before you today to advocate a message of hope and to take a stand for every mentally ill person out there who has been deemed unfit to practice their 2nd amendment rights and own a firearm for their own protection.
I’m in no way saying hand out guns to all the mentally ill please don’t run with that idealism. Some people are sicker than others. I full heartedly agree that there are grounds to being mentally ill and having your gun rights taken away especially if you are a threat to yourself or anyone else but to just blatantly label us as mass shooters is a stagnant falsehood. I just want to say to the millions of people that live with a mental illness, are responsible with their medication, or treatment plan, are grounded and stable have no reason to not practice their 2nd amendment right. If you are someone with suicidal ideation, unstable, don’t take your meds or follow your treatment plan then it is safer for you, your family and loved ones to do the responsible thing and not partake. What my point is, is that we're not morons, we know ourselves very well. We know what we can handle and what we cannot. It’s a matter of being honest with ourselves.
Unfortunately there are some cases where people are unable to do things this way, and things have gone horribly wrong but you cannot punish every mentally ill man and woman because of a select few cases that came to the forefront. You want to help out and help keep shootings from happening in the mental health circle then fix our mental health system government, quit reducing funding and abandoning the people that need us the most and Educate, Educate, Educate!!! I’m not “manic depressive” I’m Rachelle and I live day to day just like anyone else in the United States of America and I live by my constitutional rights and respect each and everyone of them. I refuse to be your scapegoat and I will continue to advocate for people like me who just want to live a normal life and protect themselves and their families. Let's take a stand!
