Lost and Homeless

The first time I was diagnosed with a mental illness was when I was 24 years old in the U.S. Navy. Since then I thought the world was against me for some reason. I came home from California, to live on my own in a tiny apartment. 2 years later I found myself homeless because I could cope with every day tasks. Lost in my blur of strange thoughts, drinking, and running to place to place on the streets. In winter, the local law enforcement, found me in a stair well, with a half bottle of vodka, NOT making any kind of sense. The officer took me to be examined at a place where the mentally ill stay. A safe, warm place. The doctors said that I was schizophenic and bipolar. I did not want to accept it then. But as the years went by I knew it was my responsibility to take my medications or I would never cope and mentally function as a whole person. I am grateful that the officer picked me up and put me in the hospital.
