Surviving the Loss of our 17 yr. Old Son to Suicide Two Years Ago
Our 17 yr. old son took his life in his ex-girlfriends front yard after a toxic nine month relationship. We got him help, when the final straw came when she broke up with him for the 6th time, on his 17the birthday. He took 11 pills, so I took him to the ER and had him admitted, against his will, to a mental health hospital. He was in there for a week, but, refused medication. I find fault with the mental health field that they will allow a 17 yr. old, who is suffering from depression, admitted against there will, to refuse medication that could have helped balance is levels and survive.
Our last two weeks with him were great. It was as if we had our son back to how he was, before she ever came along. But, sadly, he could not get past it and snuck out in the middle of the night, drove to her house and shot himself in the front yard.
He was Care Flighted to the hospital and put on life support. The sheriff had to come notify us. We arrived and he was taken for a scan that afternoon to confirm no brain activity. We signed him over to organ donation and he saved five lives with seven organs.
We have survived it, for two years and four months and I am now an advocate for suicide awareness and prevention.
I have written two book about our journey. I am using part of the proceeds to donate books to local high schools and God willing, all high schools in the US.
If I can prevent just one person from making the choice my son made, then I will consider it a success; thus my legacy for him. His legacy was saving five lives.
If you are a survivor of suicide, please know, you can get through this and you are not alone!
