Healing Is A Lot of Work, But You Are Worth It!
I can only speak from my personal experience, but I am here to tell you that depression and anxiety are not always incurable diseases. They are not always physical ailments. And that suicide is not always caused by bad brain chemistry and nothing else.
I have struggled with self-harm, suicidal thoughts, one suicide attempt, starving and overeating, panic attacks, etc. Medication did not solve my problem, and the medical/disease model led me to believe I had a “problem,” when the real issue was that I needed to make changes in my lifestyle, habits, and relationships. I worked with a life coach to learn how to redefine limiting beliefs, a dietitian to gain control of my emotional eating, a therapist to help me process my emotions…And now I attend Weight Watchers meetings for support with my emotional eating. I practice yoga daily at a small, tight-knit studio, which has helped me to learn how to sit with my emotions and calm my central nervous system. I eat healthy and get at least 8 hours of sleep.
At my very last therapy appointment, I told my therapist that I do not identify as mentally ill. She said, “Good, because you aren’t.” Emotional challenges are not a life sentence. Or a death sentence. Or a reason to abandon the search for inner peace. Whether you take medication or not is not the issue. The important thing is that you continue your journey and refuse to give up, either way. Find tools to help you with those strong emotions. Find ways to stop stuffing your feelings. If you are afraid that your illness will flare up and you will lose control of yourself, find tools so that you can help yourself. Looking within is scary at first. Sitting with emotions is scary at first. But it is all less scary than living a life of quiet desperation and fear.
Live bravely. Refuse to give in to fear. You do not have to be Kate Spade or Anthony Bourdain. You can find peace. You are worth it.
