Terminal Cancer Homeless Mentally Ill

My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 terminal cancer of the throat.  She is Homeless with substance abuse and mental health issues.

I spoke with the Discharge planner today and asked that she help my sister apply for Medicare as she is only on Medical now and has less options.

The discharge planner said they don’t do medicare applications. She suggested I apply for her.

I would like her to be transported here if i could be assured of Stable Medical condition and continuity of care.  There is a 10 day waiting period to terminate benefits when service she leaves the State .  There is an additional wait period to start health coverage here in Oregon.

The discharge plan only allows 3 days of Pain pill Medications.  I can ’t see making her suffer.  If she had Medicare she would have more options.

I am paralyzed and have limited Mobility.

I am told by the Charge Nurse she would be difficult to place because of behavior issues.   They have just started a course of medication with her although they were reluctant to do so. I have pointed out that to keep her in the hospital will cost 6-8 thousand a day I am told.  So it is a catch 22 if her mental health and financial issues are not treated or addressed she can’t be successfully placed outside the hospital.

She herself wants out desperately and for the sake of her quality of life I’d like her to be with me .

I will need support in making that happen
