I have an 8 year old second grader who has PTSD due to being sexually and physically assaulted (confirmed) in kindergarten (age 5) his first semester at school. We moved schools due the delay in that school responding according to the safety plan outlined by DCFS. He meets all criteria for it as well as social anxiety and has been diagnosed by a professional, a written letter presented to the school from the professional and the social anxiety as well as triggers such as any form of bullying trigger intense symptoms that REALLY interfere with academic functioning. He has no behavior problems but is incredibly fearful of any form or criticism from peers and especially teachers and school administrators. Very guarded sometimes yet incredibly loving too. I’m a mental health professional myself (Another professional competed the diagnosis and the symptoms are as clear as can be) & work very hard to support him without making social anxiety worse. I’ve requested an IEP or at least a 504 preferably and the school reports he is unfocused, spaces out, observes symptoms but will not provide any form of formal accommodation. I have also had a teacher recommend an eval for OT but the school denied such despite me willing to pay out of pocket stating he has to have an IEP, which they will not provide. I need to also has he has a history of hearing issues from chronic ear infections as a child and he gets teased often for the trouble with his ears. Ultimately they are violating laws, but it’s a small rural district that can be very welcoming or very rejecting if angered. He is a very smart child (has been able to recite all presidents in order since kindergarten) just the disruption and anxiety in a group setting really impair his testing and completion sometimes. I constantly get told “he just doesn’t focus” “he zones out” and each day this occurs there has been some incident at school that would clearly be a trigger. It’s incredibly frustrating because as a professional I’ve never seen a school operate like this truly. They continuously argue “he has ADHD and needs medication” and he does not per a PHD level mental health professional, a physician, and a pediatrician who insist they cannot even make such a diagnosis or medicate. That’s a no brainer really. I see my child emotionally becoming better and more secure but timed testing he panics on, someone picking at another sends him into true hyper vigilant thinking which he openly shares at home. Next school year everything is timed and my understanding is it will be far more strenuous for this is a school highly focused on standardized testing scores. How can I get the best care and support without creating additional hardship on my child?
