Tardive Dyskensia
Hello. I suffer form bipolar type 2. I’m sure this year has been rough for everyone, with or without mental illness, but especially us, living with mental illness. I was diagnosed when I was 21. It’s been 20 years now and I have been on medication on and off, but for a longtime for sure. I just found out, though only self diagnosed through information on internet, that I have symptom called tardive dyskenesia which is a side effect to anti- psychotic. My symptoms are mostly only in the face area- involuntary grimacing, grunting, jaw clenching, blinking and sticking out tongue. I suppose it could be worse where it can develop into jerky movements in the limbs and whatnot. I went off my meds for now, afraid the symptoms may worsen. It says that this condition may or may not be permanent. In all 20 years of going to therapy, not one doctor or a therapist have warned me about this. Supposing it doesn’t get worse, thought it may already be permanent, guess it’ll just be minor inconvenience to live with. It does add to my anxiety though. Anyway- just hope that my story can alert some of you in the community to one of the side effects of being on anti- psychotics.
Though 2020 was pretty grim- happy holidays to those of us who really need it.
On September 9rd 2003, my doctor diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder I . (Bipolar II is mostly depression with some manic episodes. Bipolar I is full blown mania with little depression.
