Daughter With BPD
Hi all, I hope you’re all well and safe! I wanted to relay some information that might be helpful to some. Our daughter seems to have BPD, and has always been extreme with high emotions. Once she gets out of control, it’s hard to bring her back down again. She just has to burn herself out, and then she goes back to normal like. But through the explosions, she says and does things that we’ve never seen anyone do (extreme violence, very bad self talk, etc) but afterwords she doesn’t remember half of it…
Anyway, she complained of belly aches for years when she was little, so I thought it might be a food allergy. I discovered Salicylate Sensitivity, and how the chemicals in foods (veggies and fruits) can create physical and mental trouble in some people and the laundry list of symptoms were exactly what she had. So we cut down on high salicylate foods, and that really helps her. Typical high salicylate foods are oranges, tomato sauce, peppers, berries (strawberries are the worst), among other very healthy foods…
As a family, we’re vegetarian, so I thought she was getting all the healthy foods in her diet, but once we knocked out the mid/high salicylate foods, she was a completely different person! Very easy to live with, total turnaround in behavior frustrations were so much easier for her to deal with. I’m not saying this will help everyone, but it’s something to try and I would love it if this information will help a few people. It’s so heartbreaking when my daughter has a bad episode, all I want to do is hold her like when she was tiny. We need to keep an eye on her diet and sals’ intake, but I think it really does help.
The way a salicylate sensitivity works– It’s like drops in a bucket: you can eat some, until your bucket is full, then the overload/explosion happens. And sometimes it takes days to build up, but then it seems like it’s out of the blue. The behavior gets blamed on what’s happening at the moment, but it’s a chemical imbalance that’s been building up over days, then kaboom!
Stay safe everyone, and if you read this and know someone who might want to try out a diet change for a couple weeks (it takes at least that long to clear your system), even just to see if it helps, please let them know about salicylate sensitivity. [heart to all!]
