ECT: A Life-saving Experience

I have suffered from depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember. I am 33 years old, and first sought treatment when I was 27. For the past 7 years, I tried therapy, more than 30 medication and outpatient treatment. Some helped a little, but nothing ever really helped. Then someone mentioned ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) to me. I researched the treatment and gave it some serious thought—and then I had my first treatment on February 10, 2014.

I did 2 treatments a week for 5 weeks and, after 6 treatments, I noticed the benefits. I began to feel better. Feel happy. I began to enjoy things. I began to do things. I began to want to do things, go places and see people. As I continued my treatments, the benefits continued to increase and become natural. I woke up looking forward to the day. I laughed. I was happy.

On March 21, I began the weaning process off the treatments. I only had 1 treatment that week. My most recent treatment was 2 weeks later and my next treatment is 3 weeks from that. I choose to do another one 4 weeks out from that—or I can stop the treatments and see how I feel. I can always start them again, especially if I feel a relapse.

It’s hard for me to put into words exactly what ECT treatments have done for me. But they gave me a life. A life where I feel joy, happiness and peacefulness. For the first time in my life, I feel “normal,” functional and alive. I recommend ECT to anyone who is struggling–or just see a professional to have an evaluation. It just might change your life for the better. :)
