Have Hope! Be Defiant! It’s all Temporary :) Pray Helps
I have spent the past year recovering from an episode of depression. I was suicial and had bad obsessive compulsive thoughts. I spent 14 days in the local psych ward. The pain was terrible. I cried, balled my eyes for days. My fears were persistent for weeks even after I was released.
First thing, “Love over fear.” The best piece of advice my therapist ever gave me. Remember all that you love and everything you have yet to do. Prayer helps. Always take your meds on time. Avoid caffeine if you can. Talk with others, NOT just your therapist about you thoughts. They’ll understand. Exercise helps. Get out! Just go for a walk. The endorphins help. Divergence also contributes as a distraction to bad thoughts. Watching a good movie, tv show can help you feel good. Give yourself time for the doctors and meds to work. Above all, get plenty of sleep and avoid negative stimuli like horror movies, etc.
As I said, I spent 14 days in the psych ward. It was scary and lonely but I made it. Push yourself to endure. It’s a slow, gradual journey but it can be done. You won’t believe it at the time. Like me, you’ll think of depression as a death sentence but it’s not. I spent two 14 day stays in the hospital; once in 2008, as well as in 2014. Learn from your past mistakes. Know your limits. Educate yourself about your illness.
Don’t isolate yourself. Try and stay around people. Talk! Get outside and be in the sun at least once a day. Vitamin D is good for you.
Health insurance? Ugh! Try to get the best coverage you can. It’s a hassle but it’s worth it. This is your life. Don’t be too proud to ask a parent, friend, or other family member to help you on your quest back to recovery.
There is no cure. It is something that does improve over time though. You have to learn how to live with it, cope with it. It’s okay if you’re not 100% everyday.
