My intelligent, beautiful wonderful daughter (valedictorian), got her degree in Business Finance. Was diagnosed at 26. For three years we had to fight everybody. The police were horrible. They kept telling me she was spoiled. One time my daughter was at a gas station screaming that people were trying to kill her and the officer did not want to take her to the hospital. I actually had to threaten him by saying if she got hurt, it was is fault. He finally took her. That was the last time she was in the hospital. The mental hospital told me she needed to be in a supervised home. They were going to try to get conservatorship. Next thing I know she walked into the house. They had given her a bus ticket to a shelter. When I called the shelter it was a men’s shelter only. She had 4 hospital stays. We could not get any information on what was wrong because she would not authorize it. In her condition she still had all the power. That law has to be changed for the patients safety.

She was so depressed, one week later on April 1, 2013 she walked out of the house, went to a hotel and committed suicide.

The detectives did not look for her for 3 day ( it was Easter weekend and they were short handed, which cost her life), and the day they did, they found her dead.

I cannot recover, the anniversary is coming up. All I feel is complete anger with all the people she associated with. It includes the San Juan Capistrano, Ca. sheriff department. they were useless, they never wanted to do anything, because they had to do lots of paperwork. The detectives should feel ashamed. The hospital doctors who treated her. (saw her for 15 minutes and knew she was contemplating suicide, but did not tell us, and then let her out of the hospital ) were burned out and did not seem to care.

After she died we went thru all her stuff and found all the release papers from the hospital. They all said how sick she was, but did nothing to help her) Why didn’t they tell us, so we may have been able to prevent it.

We all need to write our politicians, laws HAVE TO BE CHANGED.

My son has suffered from a low level autism (aspergers) all of his life. In his teens, (one suicide attempt at 16) which developed into depression and in his late twenties, schizophrenia. As the news widely publicised the use of anti depressants in teens caused increased suicide attempts, he chose to not use meds. His health insurance company glossed over and ignored the symptoms. Their only treatment was group therapy, and the leader threw him out of group for having his own opinion. There was zero follow up of his case. He had his first break while touring Thailand and we had to send a family member there to bring him back. As long as he stayed well rested and hydrated, he was able to maintain control. As he approached 30, the paranoia and depression intensified, but as he was an adult, we were helpless to get him help and he didn’t feel he needed it. He is very bright and a self taught computer programmer but his inability to get/keep a job frustrated his dad, who insisted he move out and start his life.

Determination

I was diagnosed by several psychologists and psychiatrists with obsessive compulsive disorder in 2009, and schizoaffective disorder in 2013 (schizophrenia + bipolar subtype). I thought I was alone, and that no one could hear me, and that suicide would be the best option for me. But it is not, suicide is not. God gives us life and life is a gift. God gives his toughest challenges to his strongest soldiers, and when things are looking bad, severely awful, do NOT give up!!! Do not EVER GIVE UP!!! I see a psychologist once/week, take 2 types of medication, am going through cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and have grown stronger with social support groups with my family and true, real friends. Diet and exercise helps too. I was 299.5 lbs and now I am closing in on 280 lbs. Prayer is very important for my family and I, and we can all get better, maybe not cured, but better every single day. See the person, not the illness. Thanks for reading in advance!

I was abused by my father and sexual assault at the time I was too afraid to speak and well I started self harming and thinking about suicide..On 11-8-12 I tried and failed to commit suicide later that week I was sent into a hospital and I stayed in there for about 4 weeks and during that time I found out I had BPD,Depression,PTSD, schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD and major Anxiety now I am 15 and for the past year I have spoken about my illness to schools because no one should be judge just because they have a illness. I’m in recovery and I have more self confidence now than ever before…yes my dad destroyed me at age 10 but through the year I built myself up and now I’m stronger and I love who I am.These Disorders and Illness don’t make us who we are..You’re Not Alone I Promise!! There’s a Fine Line Between Perseverance and Insanity

7 years ago I was plagued with an overwhelming reign of fear, confusion, anxiety and depression, to the point of suicide. I now know that my demise was the onset of schizophrenia. After several attempts with suicide and hospital visits I was finally referred to a mental health physician. He evaluated me with any insight and information I could give him. Unfortunately I was too paranoid to put all my trust in the doctors. I thought if I admitted all my ailments I would get locked away for good.

It took 4 years for me to get diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, mean while for the next four years living in unimaginable fear of everything. I was originally diagnosed as depressed. I can’t begin to explain the depression fear and confusion within these next 4 years but things kept getting worse and I didn’t care anymore if they locked me away. In desperation i broke down and finally admitted all my symptoms and relief was at my doorstep.

My doctor was able to put me on the right medication. Don’t get me wrong it took a lot of work on both of our parts to get the right dosage of meds but perseverance paid off. Don’t give up on the meds because you don’t feel totally right or they cause side effects. Eventually these wear off and you’ll feel like you again.

I am a disabled veteran of the United States Air Force. I also live with paranoid schizophrenia, complex PTSD, and major depression. In the beginning of the breaks, I was left hopeless, mentally ill, and almost homeless. I recovered. I’ve fought my way through all of the symptoms, and now face a bright future. It took ten years, but I’m still here, having never committed suicide. I love, care, and nurture through volunteer activities. I was just recently admitted to nursing school, beginning with the CNA I class, and was accepted to Harvard Medical School’s HMX online program for the interested. I’m not stopping. A creative writer, I didn’t let the schizophrenia take away my words. I made books out of passion, a passion to communicate the most vulnerable times of my life. I’m applying to Cornell University’s MFA program for creative writing this summer. I also have hopes that I can complete my pre-medical requirements at Princeton University, and complete an MD at an elite university. Your life can be amazing, as mine has already been. I am fluent in French, and know other languages basically. I have traveled to over a dozen countries. I hold an MA in English with a GPA of 4.0. I’ve worked, and still do. Your life can be amazing, because you already are. Try. Try the medicine. Try to soar. It’s not hard for you. We are the challenged, yes, but we are the amazing, too.

My brother

I recently lost my brother to suicide on October 1st, 2013. I got the call from a coroner on October 2nd. Actually the suicide note was dated Sept. 26, so who knows. But that is beside the point.

David began having problems in his late 20’s and early 30’s and was quote “diagnosed with delusional paranoia” at the time. I believe it was schizophrenia, but the doctor couldn’t talk to us due to “confidentiality”. I won’t go over all the problems and long stories over the next 5 years, but it began to be clear he couldn’t stay where he had come back home: my parents.

Brother

This has to be the hardest year of my life. Early 2016 my brother got diagnosed with depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and anxiety no one saw this coming. It happened over night our world got flipped upside down. In May 2016 my brother attempted suicide and was admitted to a behavior mental clinic. I will have to say seeing him there was the hardest thing. It didn’t even look like him I was so confused and mad at myself for not seen he needed help for being so caught up on other thing that I didn’t realize my brother was hurting so much. Scared of how our mom would take the news we kept it a secret for a couple of days we didn’t want her to know where he was or why he had been taken to the ER. After discussing what we should do we agreed she needed to know so it was my job to take her to see him. I didn’t know how to explain to her where he was so I just decided to have her see it and when she did it would be obvious what he had done.

Walking her up to the front of the door to the clinic she knew as soon as we got out of the elevator I saw her face change she was so confused sad and I knew I had lost her. I looked in her eyes to a blank stare it was it’s if she couldn’t hear me even though I was right in front of her I knew she just wanted to go in there and take my brother home with her. It took me a couple of minutes to get her to come back to snap out of it.

As we waited for my brother in the visitors patio she broke she started to cry and asked why we lied and I told her we didn’t want her to blame her self but it was too late she already did.

My parents left me there for 3 to 4 months without coming to visit me or calling to see how I was doing. Believe it or not I enjoyed being at the unit I felt like I belonged. It was there that I was diagnosed as schizophrenia.

My Mother

My mother suffered from schizophrenia and depression my whole life. She tried to commit suicide and take me and my sister with her. It was hard I loved her so much and witnessed her suffering it broke my heart. When she was on her meds you would never have known she had a problem. …she was my rock stable and loving!
