Parenting

I have a young daughter who has been given several different diagnosis over the past 3 or so years that range from being a victim of sexual abuse, to bipolar disorder with psychotic features, to just “plain ‘ol ADHD.”  I am constantly in court battling her dad to try to get her in to a real psychiatrist who can do a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation to try to get to the core of what is really going on.  He does not believe in mental illnesses, he believes that the right diet and right amount of exercise will take care of any issues.  I tried to tell him that that in itself sounded delusional, but he didn’t believe me.

I am also a “parent” to my mom, who is mentally ill.  Not officially diagnosed, but clearly paranoid, delusional and depressed, unless we really are being poisoned through the heater vents, followed by the helicopters, spied on by all the neighbors who dig tunnels under our house, and stalked by mafia because they have implanted us with tracking devices.  Then, I think we’re just in trouble.

I have to look at this and laugh, until I realize that my dear little brother has decided to stay in China where he has been living for the past 3 years.. I thought he was just going for a few weeks and then would be back to help with all this.  I guess maybe I inherited some of that delusional way of thinking.

At any rate, I was just wondering if there is anyone else out there that takes care of a mentally ill parent and also has children living at home.  Sometimes my girls have no idea why Grandma has built a tent over her bed, and I hesitate to tell them it’s because she is hiding from Mommy because we’re playing “adult” hide-n-seek, but that’s about as creative as I can get at the moment.

I would love to hear other ideas on how to help a 6 year old and a 16 year old “understand” why Grandma is a little (or a lot) like the crazy cat lady from all the stories, but is really a good person who loves them…
