Obstructions to Mental Health Care

People need mental health care, but the process in obtaining timely, effective, professional treatment is often extremely inhibiting. In addition, the criticism directed toward those who accept prescription medication and / or counseling therapy, (criticism that is due in part to misinformation about safety and side effects) can easily turn people away from obtaining relief from their symptoms.

On top of that, the high cost of medicine and therapy and the reluctance of insurance companies to cover a significant percentage of this cost is easily creating more mental anguish for people who need help NOW. It’s hard enough for an individual to wait several weeks for a medication’s positive effects to be clearly felt, as is the case with many medications prescribed for the treatment of depression. One of my greatest concerns is for the young people of this world. Without the attention of doctors and therapists qualified to help alleviate their complicated and at times frightening feelings, teenagers and young adults in particular, can easily succumb to deep depression, anxiety and even apathy not only about medical treatment,  but about their lives and the lives of others.

I believe that more has to be done to encourage and to help ease feelings of guilt for those who could benefit from medication as well as psychological counseling. It’s easy to feel guilty about taking medication for one’s mental stressors. People naturally want to be able to handle their issues on their own…in a “natural” way…as well as to avoid the extra expense of counseling therapy and medication.

In the case of clinical depression and anxiety and other mental illnesses, those who suffer from them have a hard time differentiating between rational and irrational feelings and thoughts. Obviously you cannot force a person to accept the help available,  but repeatedly explaining the advantages, as well as the physical / physiological reason for the illnesses, could help the individuals stick to the treatment plans as long as necessary, per the qualified physician’s advice. This explanation should be given not only to the patients, but to family members and caretakers as well.

There is no guarantee that a person will be totally “cured” of his or her illness. The symptoms won’t necessarily disappear completely, but they can be substantially diminished to a point where he or she can cope with daily life rationally and with a positive attitude.
