Mental Health: Don’t beware…BE AWARE AND CARE!!!

Hello.  We all can live a great, purposeful life managing Bipolar Condition or any mental health situations.

The social stigma of mental illness used to bother me to no end…and contribute to my problems!  I’m over that now, but I prefer to call it Bipolar Condition vs. “Disorder”.  I also prefer to discuss Mental Health vs. “Illness”.

My story in general:

I was always rather depressed and “different” growing up.  At age 15, extreme depression, insecurity, anxiety and suicidal thoughts overcame me.  Spent Easter morning and a confusing month in a children’s/adolescent psych treatment center.  Medication woes and quickly got worse after that.  Quickly became a patient at a large state psychiatric hospital Memorial Day weekend.  More medication woes and a whole summer as a ward of the state.  Not easy at all.

Graduated from the state hospital program, but stopped taking medicines because I did not like the side effects.  I self-medicated with alcohol over many years.  Eventually, a severe manic episode led to my hospitalization at age 23 and I was diagnosed as Bipolar.

Years of frequent job changes.  Some poor decisions and behavior here and there, but living pretty much mainstream.  Always kept doctor appointments and stayed steady with the same medication prescribed for over 20 years.  Pretty much living on an even keel “on cruise control” with a few bumps in the road and managing side effects of RX, etc.

I had to stop taking the medicine that kept me sane for over 20-years due to side effects.  I am blessed that I was able to switch medications.  In fact, I am doing much better with the new RXs compared to before!

My faith makes me even more aware and able to master life, marriage and work.  I am truly blessed to have reached this point.

There’s hope for everyone dealing with mental health issues!!!  I hope all that read this are able to stop the pain, shame and negativity associated with whatever your challenges are for you, your friends, your loved ones, your coworkers, the homeless and so on and so on!!!

Don’t beware…BE AWARE AND CARE!!!
